Keynote SpeakerJohn McKnight: John L. McKnight

Every community grows stronger as more and more of its members contribute their gifts, capacities, and skills. Aging is the process by which we grow in giftedness. John McKnight will describe how gifts get given in ways that strengthen our communities—and ourselves.

A Professor of Education and Social Policy and co-director of the Asset-Based Community Development Institute at Northwestern University, McKnight researches social service delivery systems, health policy, community organizations, neighborhood policy, and institutional racism.

Special Guest Speakers:

Using the Gifts that Age Has Given Us: Digesting the Message
Speaker: Tom Mosgaller

While big ideas often resonate with us in their theoretical forms, we may sometimes find it difficult to transition them to the real-life situations we encounter in our day-to-day lives.

As a follow-up to John McKnight’s keynote address, Tom Mosgaller will facilitate a post-address discussion and exercises to help conference participants synthesize the keynote message and find meaningful ways to apply it to their work and lives.

Presenter Tom Mosgaller is Director of Change Management at NIATx National Program Office. He has over 25 years of experience in organizational and community development as a manager, teacher, and consultant to the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

Engaging Citizens as Problem Solvers
Speaker: Dennis Donovan

The Elder Boom offers an opportunity to engage more citizens in productive civic problem solving. Typically, citizens are invited to participate in a formal process to address a local issue after it has been identified. A different approach is to bring citizens in on the front end to help name and take action on community priorities, including those that directly impact seniors.

In this session, participants will learn strategies to engage citizens in identifying community values and naming senior-related issues they want to take action on. Using shared values as a starting point allows communities to engage in problem-solving to achieve concrete objectives, even in contentious public settings.

Presenter Dennis Donovan is the national organizer for the Center for Democracy and Citizenship at Augsburg College and is an instructor at the University of Minnesota's Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.
